Gavin Creel, the musical theater actor who won a Tony Award for "Hello, Dolly!" and an Olivier Award for "The Book of Mormon," died on Monday at his home in Manhattan.

Broadway star Gavin Creel died at the age of 48. He had been diagnosed with metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

News of Creel’s passing drew an outpouring of condolences from the New York theater community, including tributes from Ben Platt, Bette Midler and more.

His passing was confirmed by his partner, Alex Temple Ward.

He was honored for a Broadway revival of “Hello, Dolly!” and won an Olivier Award for “The Book of Mormon.” In July, he was diagnosed with a rare cancer.
