Southern Taiwan worked on Friday to clear up damage from flooding and high winds after Typhoon Krathon slammed into a major metropolis, while most of the rest of the island resumed work and financial markets re-opened.

Typhoon Krathon barreled ashore on Taiwan on Thursday packing winds in excess of 100 mph and torrential rain, killing at least two people, injuring 123 and bringing the island to a standstill.

Typhoon Krathon, packing fierce winds and torrential rainfall, was around 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the major port city of Kaohsiung on Thursday morning, traveling northeastward at a speed of 4 kph (2.5 mph), according to the island’s Central Weather Administration.

Two people have been killed and more than 10,000 evacuated, the authorities said. The downpour has triggered landslides and flooding.

As Taiwan continues to grapple with the aftermath of Typhoon Krathon, around 70% of the 176,506 households that experienced power outages have had their electricity restored. However, as of 11:00 a.m.

Taiwan shut down on Wednesday with offices, schools and financial markets closed ahead of the arrival of a weakening Typhoon Krathon, which is forecast to bring storm surges along the coast and torrential rain.

Soldiers from a nearby base were mobilized to aid medical workers and firefighters in the evacuation of patients.
