Johns Hopkins University will use a portion of its $13.2 billion endowment to help compensate for major cuts to research funding by the federal government.

The opening salvos in a closely watched and potentially protracted legal showdown between the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university and the Trump administration are expected Monday in a Massachusetts federal courtroom.

The federal government has cancelled about 11 billion dollars worth of university research funding, and is threatening to cut more. When the federal government stops funding research, there's no one else to take on those costs.
