Python isn't the only option for programming machine learning applications: there’s a growing group of developers who use JavaScript to run machine learning models.

Although Python excels in one-off, general-purpose tasks, its biggest drawback is speed. It doesn’t match Java in supporting real-time tasks or financial transactions where milliseconds matter.

Whatever the reason, by November 2018 Python's share of questions asked each month on Stack Overflow rose to 11.3 percent, ahead of JavaScript's share of 10.2 percent.

GitHub JavaScript Python. Python has become the most popular programming language on GitHub, while the use of Jupyter Notebooks has also soared, according to GitHub’s Octoverse 2024 report.

Last year, Python passed Java as the second-most popular language on GitHub by repository contributors and it continued to maintain its runners-up position this year as well.
