Merapi, which means "Mountain of Fire", lies near the ancient city of Yogyakarta at the centre of densely populated Java island. It killed 70 people in a 1994 eruption and 1,300 in 1930.

INDONESIAN AUTHORITIES have raised the alert status of the Anak Krakatau volcano to “red” and diverted all flights around the erupting mountain, which triggered the deadly tsunami last Saturday.

However, the US Geological Survey said a magnitude-6.7 quake struck at a depth of 24km, 277 kilometres south of Tasikmalaya in West Java and 241km east-north-east of Christmas Island.
