Gary city officials moved one step closer to making the long-awaited Lake County Convention Center a reality Monday night.

City officials have filed a legal notice asking for design-build services to design and construct the convention center.

The convention center closed in 2020. One of the last events held at the convention center was the funeral and homegoing service of Gary’s historic mayor, Richard Hatcher.

Built in 1981, the convention center has been a cultural and civic hub in downtown Gary. The city is seeking innovative ideas to ensure long-term sustainability and job creation.

The issue is on the agenda for the board's Wednesday meeting. In addition to the Gary site, the commissioners have been reviewing a proposal to put a convention center in Patriot Park in Hobart.
