American Scene painting emerged from an anxiety-ridden period of national self-examination between the Great Depression and World War II. It pretty much petered out as the booming 1950s unfolded.

Roger Kuntz: Kuntz (1926-75) was not a major artist, but his fusion of traditional American Scene painting with Pop-inflected L.A. freeway imagery got wide notice in the early 1960s.
