A powerful winter storm that dumped heavy snow and glazed roads with ice across much of Texas and Oklahoma lumbered eastward into southern U.S. states overnight, prompting governors to declare states of emergency and shuttering schools across the region.

DALLAS - Emergency resources have been activated across Texas for this week's winter storm, including warming centers and road assistance. Gov. Greg Abbott urged Texans on Wednesday to stay weather-aware, check DriveTexas.org before traveling, and follow official guidance.

Today is a FOX 26 Storm Alert Day in southeast Texas. Heavy rain will begin to move in midday with the heaviest rain expected later this afternoon into the evening. Models are showing 2 to 4 inches of rain possible in total and the highest amounts will likely be close to the coast.

Due to potential icy roads across the Hill Country, some school districts will start on a delay starting Thursday, Jan. 9.
