Workers removed felled trees and swept up shattered glass in southern Taiwan on Friday as Typhoon Krathon was downgraded to a tropical depression after killing two and injuring hundreds.

Typhoon Krathon, packing maximum sustained winds of 78 mph with gusts of 101 mph,was forecast to weaken into a tropical depression before it reaches the capital, Taipei.

Typhoon Krathon barreled ashore on Taiwan on Thursday packing winds in excess of 100 mph and torrential rain, killing at least two people, injuring 123 and bringing the island to a standstill.

Two people have been killed and more than 10,000 evacuated, the authorities said. The drenching rain brought damage and widespread power outages from the storm, downgraded to a depression.

A slow-moving typhoon approaching Taiwan led to school and office closures for a third consecutive day, with authorities asking people to stay indoors.
