The annual Geminid meteor shower returns to the night sky on Nov. 19 ahead of its peak in mid-December. Here's what you need to know.

The Geminids — the year's best, last and least talked about multicolored meteor shower — has started and could see up to 150 "shooting stars" in an hour in December.

The Geminid meteor shower begins Tuesday as one of the year's best meteor showers. The Geminids start in mid-November and run through Christmas Eve. Peak activity happens Dec. 13 and 14, when 120 meteors per hour are possible under the right conditions.

Leonid meteors are visible in the night sky from early November to early December. This weekend, the ongoing meteor shower reaches its maximum intensity, with a peak Sunday night into early Monday.

And there are still more meteor showers left between now and New Year's, with at least one fireball event happening at all times. That means you have the chance of seeing a shooting star on any given night. Since most meteor showers last for weeks, many overlap, giving you increased odds on some days.

The Leonid meteor shower has been active all month, but it will be at its strongest Saturday and Sunday nights, according to the American Meteor Society. The shower is best viewed between midnight and dawn, ideally in a place well away from city and street lights.

Skies are expected to be clear this weekend for the peak of the annual Leonid Meteor Shower. This shower may result in around 15 visible meteors per hour under ideal viewing conditions. The Leonids are known for high-speed meteors that can travel at up to 44 miles per second.

Stargazers in Pennsylvania are in for a celestial treat as the Leonid meteor shower lights up the night sky, EarthSky reports. The annual meteor display is expected to peak late tonight, Saturday, Nov.
