Tourists in the Canary Islands have been warned of wind gusts of up to 70kmph after a weather alert has been put in place.

The Canary Islands' general directorate of emergencies has issued a pre-alert status for strong winds across all the islands.

The Government has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and to monitor traffic conditions during the storm.
