“Not everybody can compete using Lego and motors and mechanics,” said 11 year old Alisha Anderson. She added that the robotic programming is the most difficult, but she loves the competition.

During the Jan. 4 introduction to the program, the Joseph students had to release a shark at the reef. “They’ve got to figure how to design the robot,” Koehn said.

This included programming Lego robots, such as Ruarcc's, using block-based coding. Clare McGrath is the senior leader for creative skills at the college.

Teacher Clare McGrath told BBC NI that the college also started a new Key Stage Three curriculum, which included programming Lego robots, such as Ruarcc’s, using block-based coding.

The robot’s parts, including gears, connecting blocks and two motors, all come from Lego kits. The only exception is the tube holder that the researchers had to 3D print.
