Originally developed by Sun, which Oracle acquired in 2010, Java programs are executed by a runtime engine (the Java Virtual Machine) that must be installed in the target computer.

The compiled program can be cached in the computer for reuse. Microsoft had its own Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for several years, but terminated support at the end of 2007.
