Until the 1970s, there were only commodity futures. Current examples of popular commodity futures contracts are wheat, corn and sugar in the food category. Energy futures include oil and gas.

For example, someone might make an index future out of the technology sector. They would select an index that tracks the sector and then write a contract worth $10 times the value of that index.
