Kentucky women’s basketball’s first season under head coach Kenny Brooks came to an end Sunday afternoon with an 80-79 overtime loss to five-seed Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington.

As Kentucky prepares to face Illinois in the Round of 32 in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats find themselves in an unfamiliar position—underdogs. Despite their status as a No. 3 seed, Kentucky enters Sunday’s matchup as a 1.5-point underdog to No. 6-seeded Illinois, a designation that has fueled the team’s motivation all season long.

Kentucky is one of the most storied programs in college basketball, John Calipari, to Mark Pope. Now, the Wildcats are a win away from the Sweet 16.

Georgia Amoore scored 34 points, including three free throws in the final 10 seconds for fourth-seeded Kentucky, which nearly blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead but held on for a 79-78 victory over 13th-seeded Liberty in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament on Friday.

The No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats face the No. 19 Kansas State Wildcats in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The teams play Sunday for the first time this season.
