A subtropical storm named Patty has formed near the Azores, drifting east toward Spain
A subtropical storm — in essence a hybrid between a tropical and a nontropical storm — has formed near the Azores, prompting warnings for the entire Portuguese archipelago. The 16th tropical or subtropical storm to form in the Atlantic basin during the 2024 hurricane season has been named Patty.
Patty to dump rain on the Azores; Tropical Storm Lane to weaken
A storm system will likely bring heavy rain to the Azores islands over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday. Subtropical Storm Patty is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 2.5 to 5 centimeters (1 to 2 inches) across the archipelago through Sunday.
On the forecast track, the center of Patty is expected to move near or just south of the Azores tonight and Sunday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts.
