As it turned out, however, the old RDBMS dog could learn new tricks. Relational databases figured out how to store complex types using the SQL:1999 object model.

Throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s “database” strictly meant “relational database.” SQL ruled.

And so it struck me that the only way to make this happen was to deliver this platform on something that IT already knows. And for us, that was the language of the relational database -- SQL.

So SQL Server on Linux is still a pretty significant undertaking. And, given the caveats I've outlined here, it's not clear that undertaking will pay off for Redmond. But let's not get too granular.
