ATLANTA - Winter weather gripped North Georgia on Friday, leaving behind snow, ice, and treacherous road conditions. As temperatures continue to plummet overnight, freezing rain and refreeze on roads pose significant hazards heading into the weekend.

Parts of Georgia and Carolinas are digging out from a winter storm on Saturday after it produced heavy snow, freezing rain and ice across the region, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of customers.

Georgia DOT is clearing roads and treating over 20,000 lane miles amid snow, sleet, and ice. Crews are working in hazardous conditions, but drivers are urged to avoid travel due to black ice risks. Governor Kemp declared a State of Emergency and advised extreme caution.
