President Joe Biden aides are once again expressing hope that Israel and Hamas could be close to reaching a deal for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by the terrorist group.

NBC News has been told by a senior Biden administration official that a Gaza ceasefire deal that is currently on the table is the same that the president outlined back in May. NBC News' Daniele Hamamdjian reports for Early Today.

Israeli strikes killed dozens of people across Gaza on Wednesday, Palestinian medics said, as talks to halt the fighting continued in Qatar and Israeli troops recovered the body of at least one hostage from a tunnel near the southern city of Rafah.

Israel launched its assault on Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on 7 October, 2023, killing 1,200 people and capturing more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Nearly 46,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeal’s retaliatory offensive.
