Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka extended her strong run at the China Open with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on Monday over Katie Volynets, setting up an exciting round-of-16 matchup with sixth-ranked Coco Gauff.

Coco Gauff reached the third round of the China Open by beating Clara Burel 7-5, 6-3 on Friday in her first match since the U.S. Open.

Katie Boulter is out of the China Open after suffering a straight-set defeat by Coco Gauff on Sunday. The British number one was beaten 7-5 6-2 by the world number six, who progresses to the fourth round in Beijing.

Naomi Osaka has battled her way to the round of 16 and she now meets Coco Gauff for a place in the quarter-finals. Osaka is enjoying one of her best tournaments for some time and she will gain confidence with every win. Katie Boulter was knocked out of the China Open following a straight-sets defeat to Coco Gauff in the third round. A battling performance saw Boulter test the world number six, but Gauff managed to snatch a tight first set before wrapping up victory in the second to win 7-5 6-2.

In her last match on September 1, 2024, Gauff was defeated 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 versus Emma Navarro in the Round of 16 of the US Open. Over the past two years, in the lone match between Burel and Gauff (in the Round of 64 of the BNP Paribas Open), Gauff won 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.
