Hi We have done both! I think that the fact that you can see the San MarcoTower in all its glory from San Girogio makes the case for a single trip up San Giorigio Maggiore! Plus - it is the less popular and therefore quicker ascent; we had no queue at all in September.

Did not realize it was under maintenance. Suggest that you contact the tourist board in Venice for answers.
